Tips to help you beat the January blues

The Christmas and New Year celebrations are now but a distant memory. January has arrived, bringing with it hectic work schedules, winter bugs and cold dreary wet weather. It’s back to reality with a big bump!

While traditionally January may not be the happiest month of the year, there are plenty of things we can do to help boost our mood and make January more joyful. The easiest way to help keep the blues at bay, is to look at making changes to your habits and everyday routine.

Here’s a few of our favourite January blues busting tips to get you started…

Get plenty of fresh air and exercise

We’ve highlighted the health benefits of exercise before, and how keeping fit can make you happier and healthier. It’s important to keep active all year long, although January isn’t the most conducive month for exercise. This time of year it’s harder than ever to find the motivation to go for a run or a workout at the gym. But physical activity combined with fresh air is proven to help beat the blues. It reduces stress and anxiety, helps to lift low mood and boosts our energy levels. Fresh air and exercise are a winning combination - even if it’s just a jog around the neighbourhood or a short walk during your lunch break.

Plan and set achievable goals

What are your hopes and dreams for 2017? Plenty of studies suggest setting positive achievable goals can actually help to boost our mental health and prevent us from feeling stuck in a rut. The start of a new year is the perfect opportunity to address your ambitions and goals. From running a half marathon to travelling and learning a new language or skill, try to find something positive to focus on.

Avoid comfort eating

Even after all that overindulging at Christmas, many people still find themselves craving feel-good comfort food during the cold winter months. But don’t use winter as an excuse to stop eating healthily. It’s cold and flu season, so it’s extremely important to eat well to boost your winter immunity and prevent yourself from falling sick. Cut down on junk food, eat plenty of fruit and veg, choose healthy snacks like nuts, add more omega-3 rich foods to your diet and boost your five-a-day with a homemade smoothie.
