How has 2016 been for you? Were you able to achieve all of those health and fitness goals you had your heart set on, this time last year? With 2017 now around the corner, the new year brings with it an opportunity for a fresh start for everything, including fitness.

If you want your health and fitness goals to stick next year – or at least, make sure they don’t fizzle out by the time February rolls around – it’s time to wipe the slate clean and start afresh. Make a commitment to fitness and a happier and healthier way of life by following these useful tips...

Start now

Yes, right now. Today. Not tomorrow, next week or next month. You don’t have to wait for January to join a gym. In fact, most people who hit the gym with a vengeance in January barely make it through to the end of February. For your health and fitness goals to be achievable, you need to make a long term change to your lifestyle. That means making time for exercise so it becomes a natural part of your daily life - not just a New Year’s resolution.

Think positively

A determined, can do attitude will go a long way towards helping with your health and fitness goals. A positive attitude can so often be the difference between success and failure. Whether you want to lose weight or just generally enjoy a healthier, more active lifestyle, what you hope to achieve will very much depend on your way of thinking. A positive mental attitude will help you stay focused and motivated. Read more about how to achieve a positive mindset.

Write it down

Writing down your goals may seem a bit old fashioned. But it works. Studies have proven that putting pen to paper, and being specific about your goals, can go a long way to helping you accomplish them. By making a list, you’ll be able to see the steps you need to take to get to where you want to be. So set a specific goal and write down how you intend to achieve it. The devil is in the detail – even if your goal is simply to fit into your favourite pair of jeans!

Be realistic

Most of us have high expectations for ourselves, which can lead to disappointment and feelings of failure. So instead, start by setting realistic, achievable goals that aren’t too far out of your comfort zone. And if you’re someone who struggles with motivation, try working out with a friend or partner. Plenty of studies have shown that fitness partnerships help with accountability and can in fact improve results.

Have fun

There’s so much more to fitness and exercise than working up a sweat on a treadmill. Take a dance class, go for a swim or a bike ride with family and friends. You’ll struggle to stick to your health and fitness goals if you’re not having fun.
